Overseas Workshops
Frequently Asked Questions
I have a friend/spouse/partner who would like to join me on the trip but is not a photographer, will there be things for him/her to do?
We’ve designed our overseas trips for both photographers and non-photographers. Joel is dedicated to the photo participants. And we have an additional dedicated guide devoted to those not into photography. So whether or not you’re a photographer you’ll be part of an amazing travel experience with superb lodging, authentic local cuisine and wine, and visits to fascinating places.
What kind of photography experience do I need?
We often have a wide range of skill levels from beginner to pro, which is one reason we keep our groups very small, so everyone gets individual attention. The only thing we ask is that you have a basic working knowledge of your camera by the time you come on our trip. You also need the desire to shoot great photographs!
What kind of camera do I need?
Generally speaking, we recommend using a camera with interchangeable lenses because of its versatility. We do not require it however, and if you do not have an interchangeable lens camera, a camera with a zoom lens and the ability to override fully automatic (aperture priority and shutter priority) is best. That said, we have had participants do the whole workshop with an iPhone! The bottom line is that you have fun and a desire to improve your photography and take advantage of the places and people we encounter. If you are not sure about your camera feel free to contact us.
What kind of camera equipment do I need to bring?
Mainly a camera, a tripod, a comfortable camera bag or pack, camera battery charger with extra batteries, and plenty of memory cards. You will also need a laptop or device for editing and preparing photos for class critique and review. If you have a way to get images from your tablet or phone to a jump drive then you can probably get by with that but if possible a laptop often works best. Once you are registered, Joel will send out a more complete list about a month before departure, but these are the basic items you’ll need.
Is airfare included?
Because we have participants originating their travel in all parts of the world we do not include the airfare. Also some folks want to use miles for their tickets. This way you don’t end up paying for travel that may not fit your needs or desired departure location and schedule.
